Hundreds of families flocked to the first ever Super Saturday of Sport in Feltham, to take part in free taster sessions.

Fun-filled activities on offer included indoor rowing, cycling, rugby, trampolining, taekwondo and pro-wrestling.

The event aimed at encouraging children's interest in fitness and leading an active lifestyle was staged at Feltham Park on a glorious sunny Saturday (August 22).

The brainchild of Kirsten Lonsdale of Chiswick, inspired on the back of the London 2012 Olympic Games, was the second Super Saturday of Sport in the borough this summer following a record turn out for the previous event on Turnham Green last month.

Mrs Lonsdale said: "I was so pleased with the success of the first ever Super Saturday of Sport in Feltham.

"For me the event was about inspiring people of all ages to be active and we certainly achieved that.

"I had an incredible army of volunteers who helped me to set up from 7.30 am and stayed all day.

"I have already had offers from Feltham people to help me organise the 2016 edition and new sports clubs have contacted me to ask if they can be part of the event in future years.

"I am grateful to Hounslow Council for supporting Super Saturday of Sport in Feltham and Chiswick.

"I believe, as partners, we are providing a model for what can be achieved with a shared vision to create active and engaged communities."

Feltham north ward councillor Khulique Malik, who helped organise the event, added: “It was a fantastic day. We opened at around 10.30am and people kept coming throughout the day.

"I really want to campaign for more sports to be available to everyone young and old; whatever their background. I really enjoy sport and if you’re healthy; you’re happy.

“I tried wheelchair rugby for the first time – it was great.”

As Hounslow limbers up to be one of the hosts of Rugby World Cup 2015, the event backed by the local authority, was a roaring success with more than 20 clubs turning up including Feltham Warriors who led the basketball sessions; Brentford FC Community Sports Trust put on football training; and cricket was served up by Ashford Cricket Club.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council, added: “I’m determined that the legacy of hosting the Rugby World Cup will be a healthier Hounslow.

“The Super Saturday of Sports is designed to get as many people active as possible in Hounslow.

"There are a huge array of different sports available in the borough so there really is something for everyone.

"The idea was to have a good sample of sports all in one place to give people the chance to sample everything in the space of a few hours.

“Thanks to the organisers and the clubs who made the Super Saturday of Sport such a great success.”
