A Sudbury newsagents can no longer sell alcohol after continually breaching the conditions of its licence.

According to Met Police , Sudbury A-Z Newsagents, in Harrow Road, Sudbury, had its licence revoked after Brent Licensing Team asked for a review on Monday, October 26.

The police case was presented to the Licensing Committee after a series of breaches following a previous review of the licence at the end of 2014.

In September 2014, officers had witnessed drunken street drinkers being sold alcohol.

The newsagents was then given conditions to comply with which included no high strength beers, lagers and ciders above 5.5% ABV being stocked and no sale of single cans of alcohol at any time.

A London Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “In July, officers from Brent Licensing Team visited and found the premises was in breach of nearly all the conditions.

“Several high strength beers were found in the fridge.

"Two customers purchased just one bottle of beer.

"The shop worker was asked to open one of the bottles in the store which he did.”

Met Police say a further breach was witnessed in August when a member of staff sold alcohol to a drunk man.

The worker was issued with a £90 fixed penalty notice.

All these breaches were put before the committee where they decided to revoke the newsagents' licence.

PC Michael Sullivan, from Brent Licensing Team, said: “As soon as we recognised the venue was becoming problematic, we very quickly took action to address the issues.

“We will robustly deal with any premises that fail to uphold their licensing conditions.”
