An accountancy student has won a national award - at the age of 85.

Ashraf Ali, from Westminster, picked up a prize at The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Training Provider Awards, where he scooped Distance Learner of the Year award.

It was a remarkable effort by Mr Ali, who is studying with BPP Professional Education, as he had to get to grips with new technology he had previously had little knowledge of.

He put his achievement down to his attitude: “I feel very pleased.

“I thought it would be worthwhile to spend the time pursuing further studies rather than doing nothing.

“Age does not matter to me. A more important consideration is maturity of mind.

"I faced various problems but the tutors were very helpful.

“I also had health problems but managed to overcome them by using willpower. In some cases, ageing is a psychological problem.”

Since the awards, Mr Ali has received his AAT Level 4 certificate which takes pride of place at his home alongside his award.
