Shoppers were stunned to see the Galactic Empire solider patrolling the High Street shopping centre on bank holiday Monday – celebrated internationally as Star Wars Day, marked every year on May the fourth (be with you).
Neil Thompson, a spokesman for the shopping centre, said: “I think there was a bit of amazement from some people.
“I don’t know quite what it is about Stormtroopers, but everyone seems to warm to them, despite them being the bad guys.”
He added: “It went down really well. It’s been great. A lot of people have been wanting selfies taken with him.”
The armour-clad minion was in town to promote the launch of a one-day ‘Are You Big Into Star Wars?’ competition being run by the shopping centre ahead of the scheduled release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens on December 18.
Prizes up for grabs include a family pass to see the Star Wars at Madame Tussauds exhibition and a toaster that burns Darth Vader’s face onto slices.
Entrants must show their passion for the epic fantasy series, created by George Lucas, by sharing a selfie, reenactment, piece of artwork, voice impression or picture of a memorabilia collection with the shopping centre through its twitter, Facebook or Instagram accounts.
Anyone who ‘likes’ any Star Wars-related Facebook post on Monday will also put in the running for one of 10 pairs of tickets to see the new film being given away by the shopping centre.
