Motorists are being urged to avoid the Staples Corner flyover this weekend (September 9 and 10) due to the severe delays predicted during its second weekend closure.

The temporary closure of Staples Corner flyover affects motorists across three weekends in September during "essential" refurbishment work.

Pictures from Transport for London , which is warning motorists to find alternative routes from Friday (September 8) evening until Monday (September 11) morning, show the extent of the traffic chaos last week .

Drivers can be seen queuing along the incredibly congested A406 after being forced to follow a diversion in place throughout the weekend.

The busy section of the road is just north of Neasden , and close to both Wembley Stadium and Brent Cross shopping centre.

The road, on the North Circular, will be "extremely busy" again throughout this weekend, so road users are advised to "allow more time for journeys and use alternative routes where possible".

The closure is to allow a 40-strong workforce to replace two 22-metre long steel expansion joints, which are vital to allow the flyover to cope with temperature change.

TfL said it considered every alternative to the full closure of the flyover , however to do this essential work using part-closures would have taken nearly 50 days and would have affected many more road users.

'Vital refurbishment of the Staples Corner flyover'

Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport at TfL, said the work to the A404 is "essential".

“We’re sorry for the disruption this vital refurbishment of the Staples Corner Flyover will cause," he said.

"We will be working as fast as we can to replace the expansion joints, which is essential to extend the life span of the flyover.

Staples Corner Flyover to close this weekend for road works

"During the closures road users in the area should allow more time for their journeys and, where possible, consider alternative routes.”

During the closures, TfL has measures in place to reduce travel chaos, including rapid response units around the area, re-phasing of the traffic signals in the area to reduce disruption and the cancellation of any non-urgent local roadworks.

Up-to-date information on the closures will be on the @TfLTrafficNews and @TfLBusAlerts Twitter feeds and also on their website .
