Motorists have been warned about journey disruptions this weekend as a major road will be shut for repair work.
The temporary closure of Staples Corner flyover will affect motorists across three weekends in September during "essential" refurbishment.
The road will be closed from 10pm on Friday (September 1) until 5am on Monday (September 4).
On top of this, another closure will be in place from 10pm on September 8 until 5pm on September 11 and again from 12.01am to 11.59pm on Sunday September 17.
During the closure of the flyover, the Transport for London (TfL) workforce will replace two 22-metre long steel expansion joints, which allow the road to cope with temperature change.
Leon Daniels, managing director of Surface Transport at TfL, apologised for the inconvenience to motorists but said the repair work is vital.
“We’re sorry for the disruption this vital refurbishment of the Staples Corner Flyover will cause,” he said.
"We will be working as fast as we can to replace the expansion joints, which is essential to extend the life span of the flyover.
"During the closures road users in the area should allow more time for their journeys and, where possible, consider alternative routes.”
A spokesman from TfL added: "TfL considered every alternative to the full closure of the flyover, however to do this work using part-closures would have taken nearly 50 days and would have affected many more road users.
"TfL has a number of measures in place to help reduce the impact of the closure, including rapid response units placed around the area on standby to clear any incidents or accidents on surrounding roads, messaging advising drivers of the closures, re-phasing of traffic signals in the area to reduce disruption as much as possible and ease displaced traffic and cancellation of any non-urgent roadworks in the local area.”
When will the closures be?
The flyover will be fully closed in both directions between the following times:
- 10pm Friday September 1 to 5am Monday September 4
- 10pm Friday September 8 to 5am Monday September 11
- 12.01am to 11.59pm Sunday September 17
When are additional refurbishment works?
In addition to the three full weekend closures, preparation and resurfacing work will also affect traffic at other times:
- The flyover will be reduced to one lane in each direction for four consecutive nights between 10pm and 5am from Monday August 28
- The flyover will be closed eastbound from 10pm Monday September 18 to 5am Tuesday September 19, and westbound from 10pm Tuesday September 19 to 5am Wednesday September 20
What buses will be affected?
Buses in the area will be delayed, diverted, reduced or terminated early. Affected routes include:
- 32 (diverted via the A5 when the flyover is fully closed, and won't serve Staples Corner)
