News that work has started on a multi-million pound football facility in Northolt has been met with a mixed reaction on social media.

On Tuesday (April 25) getwestlondon reported work was under way on a £4.88million football facility in Rectory Park.

From February 2018 it will boast two full-size, flood-lit 3G football pitches, six changing rooms, two community rooms and a pavillion.

'£4.8million for an overrated game'

On Facebook , Bob West was far from pleased with the news.

He said: "£4.8million on an overrated game when, in the real world, people are left to die in hospital corridors due to the massive shortfall in NHS spending.

"Somebody start this long awaited revolution."

'Keeping fit helps the NHS'

Fiona Donoghue, however, did not agree.

She told Mr West: "You don't think playing football and keeping fit helps the NHS?"

It did not end there, though, as Mr West replied: "I think it (is) massively overinflated and consumes individuals to the extent they 'take their eye off the ball'."

'Glad it's finally happening'

Champion Preet Singh praised the news.

He said: "Glad it's finally happening! The area has been a dump for ages."

Kevin Durkin was also pleased with the facility, saying on the social media site: "About time so many teams will benefit from this and the youngsters as well.

"Well done FA let's hope it's not over priced to play on."

But Jamie Emery was not quite so happy, commenting: "Another place for the hard hoodies of Northolt to hang out and cause grief."

The facility, which will also become the new home of Middlesex FA, will primarily be used for football but will host other sports too.

Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, said: "I'm delighted to see this exciting development in Rectory Park get started.

"These all-weather pitches, sports and community facilities will bring much needed and long-awaited phenomenal facilities to Northolt and the borough."

Middlesex FA will move to the spot from its current headquarters in Roxborough Road, Harrow.

FA bosses hope the site will help it hit its target of doubling the number of women playing football by 2020.
