A speed limit in Hounslow which saw a speed camera make £1.5m in six months through fines will become permanent, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed.

Almost 15,000 motorists using the North Circular Road were fined between April and October last year, reported the Evening Standard, raking in £1.5million.

The camera is located northbound in Gunnersbury Avenue, outside the International School of London.

A limit of 40mph, running from Chiswick Roundabout to Popes Lane in both directions, was reduced to 30mph by TfL in May 2015 as temporary measure to protect workers upgrading Power Bridge Road.

But a consultation to make the 30mph limit permanent was launched in February last year, before it was backed two months later.

It will be permanently imposed upon completion of the Power Road Bridge upgrades, TfL added, which is expected to be in early 2018.

News of how much the camera had made in six months sparked a mixed response on getwestlondon'sFacebook page, with some claiming it was "sneaky" while others believed the limit was fair.

Pauline Law said: "It is a sneaky camera, as the road used to be 40 and the camera before it went digital was 40.

"So you go over the bridge and even without accelerating the car goes above 30 on that down slope, so mostly have to brake.

"I feel that will cause more accidents."

But responding to the figures, Beata Mutke, added: "Well rightly so! The speed limit is there for a reason if you drive faster you pay for it! Don't go over the speed limit. It is so simple!"

A total of 139 people responded to the consultation proposing the permanent change, with 75% saying they "supported or partially supported" proposals.

TfL said 24% answered "no", with 1% stating they were "not sure".

In statement to the figures raised by the speed camera, a spokesman for TfL said: "We are committed to making London’s roads safer for all and managing traffic speeds is key to that.

"The limit on the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue has been reduced to 30mph from 40mph to ensure the safety of all road users and contractors working onsite to upgrade Power Road Bridge.

"There is clear signage in the area to advise drivers of this."
