A school is closed to pupils on Tuesday (December 5) after a fire damaged its building.

Staff at the Spanish Institute in Portobello Road are unsure when it will reopen after firefighters tackled a blaze in its computer suite on Monday evening (December 4).

The school, whose pupils include the children of Spanish Embassy staff, will find out on Tuesday afternoon whether it will reopen on Wednesday (December 6).

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the three-storey building at 8.23pm, with four engines and 21 firefighters from Kensington, North Kensington and Paddington attending.

Watch Manager Thomas Wolfe, who was at the scene, said: “When we arrived the smoke that was coming out was very black and thick so we were quite worried about back draught conditions.

“The fire had caught the wall and some of the computers alight but crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control and stop it spreading to other parts of the building.”

The fire was under control by 9.53pm.

The Spanish Institute teaches more than 500 pupils aged between four and 18.

LFB believe the fire was caused by a fault within a chilling unit.
