Southern Rail is to restore a "full service" from Tuesday January 24, following suspended strike action by Aslef union, according to the company.

The train drivers' union had planned industrial action for three days next week, but Southern has announced that this has now been called off.

The strike was planned for January 24, 25 and 27, with an RMT conductor's strike set for Monday, January 23.

During Monday's strike, Southern says it will be able to run over 70% of its trains.

But Southern will not be able to reintroduce the full timetable until January 24, as the work rosters for the week have already been issued.

Southern advise passengers to check their journey before travelling

Southern's passenger services director, Angie Doll, said: “Whilst, inevitably, there will be disruption next Monday, the good news is that due to the changes we've now fully rolled out, we're now able to run more services on more routes serving more passengers and ultimately we'll have fewer cancellations and delays.

"Next Monday, some 200 extra trains will be running and several routes will have their first service on an RMT strike day.

"The RMT should now recognise that their industrial action is wholly futile.

"They should stop the strikes, get back round the table with us and move forward together with us, delivering a better railway for our passengers."

This follows the completion of the programme to put drivers in sole control of Southern trains, including the operation of the doors.

What service will passengers now receive?

On Monday January 23, routes will now run much later than before and the following routes, which were previously suspended due to the RMT strike, will now run:

  • Eastbourne to Hastings
  • Chichester to Portsmouth and Southampton
  • Lewes to Haywards Heath
  • There will be a direct service to Coastway stations from London.

From Tuesday January 24, Southern plan to operate a full service.

Gatwick Express will run every 15 minutes between Victoria and Gatwick, and every half hour to Brighton between 5am and 10pm.

It will then run half hourly between Victoria and Gatwick until midnight.

Overnight, there will be no service, to allow for National Rail engineering work.

Passengers will be able to use a Thameslink overnight service.

Southern advises passengers to check their website before travelling.
