Dozens of new carriages have been rolled out on South West Trains serving Hounslow routes.

As one of the busiest services on the network, at least 10 trains during the morning rush-hour and nine services during the evening peak times, have gone from eight cars to 10.

These additional 38 carriages will help thousands more people on routes to and from Waterloo serving Windsor; Weybridge via Hounslow; Hounslow; and Hounslow via Twickenham; where services stop at Richmond; Twickenham; Whitton; Feltham; Isleworth; Syon Lane; Brentford; Kew Bridge and Chiswick.

In the biggest investment since the 1930s, the rail operator's £65m roll-out of additional carriages is now 75% complete.

To date, 81 extra cars have been introduced to the network with extra space for more than 17,000 passengers, on class 456 and class 458/5 trains running on the Windsor, Guildford, Woking, Dorking and Hampton Court lines.

The full roll-out to 108 carriages is expected to be completed early next year.

SWT engineering director Christian Roth said: “These new carriages are not only providing much more space for passengers on many of our busiest services, they also include significantly improved facilities too.

“On average, we are introducing one new carriage every week and by early next year all 108 carriages will be in service for passengers.

“This is a significant step towards the biggest improvements this network has seen for decades and is a major part of our promise to increase space for passengers by 30%.”

Improvements to carriages include wider doors to help passengers get on and off the train, improved seating, full CCTV and new flooring.

Rail Minister Claire Perry said: "We want to see better journeys on a railway fit for the 21st century.‎

"That is why we are investing in new, more comfortable carriages for thousands of South West Trains’ customers.

"Passengers will benefit from more space, more seats and better facilities.

"It’s all part of our long-term economic plan to make the biggest investment in our railways since the Victorian era."

By 2018, more than 250 new carriages are to be introduced and platforms extended at relevant stations.
