Soldiers from the Household Cavalry, famous for its mounted displays on state occasions, are saddling up for a new challenge.

Around 10 members of the Household Cavalry Regiment plan to cycle 1,300-miles in 13 days between the 13 Rugby World Cup venues, ending up at Twickenham Stadium on September 18, when the tournament kicks off.

They hope to raise £5,000 for the Household Cavalry Foundation, which supports injured soldiers, veterans and retired horses from the Household Cavalry, as well as helping to preserve its heritage.

The Household Cavalry consists of The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals, the oldest and most senior regiments in the British Army.

Its members are famed for performing ceremonial duties on occasions like the Queen's Birthday Parade and they are Her Majesty's official bodyguards.

Soldiers from the Household Cavalry Regiment will be setting off from Combermere Barracks in Windsor, where they are based, on September 6.
