News that Southall and Hayes residents were left choking after enduring constant "suffocating" smells in recent weeks really kicked up a stink.

Once our readers had a whiff that the stench, described as smelling like "burning plastic or tar", was affecting neighbours day and night, there were mixed reactions.

Ealing Council says it has received a large number of odour complaints in the last three weeks, some "from the vicinity of industrial tarmac and roadstone coating plant centres in Hayes".

A spokesman for the council said: "Although they lie within Hillingdon Council’s jurisdiction, we have responded to these complaints and are working closely with Hillingdon and the business concerned to find the source of the smell and put a permanent solution in place."

This reader gave her opinion on tarmac plant FM Conway in Hayes, which previously inflicted Hayes residents with odour.

Some readers shared their experiences of varying smells in their areas.

One reader remarked that the factory is useful to the area.

And this reader finds it hard to believe anyone could NOT notice the odours.
