Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave visited a school in Hammersmith to open its new sports centre.

The five-time gold medallist unveiled the foundation stone of the new centre for Latymer Upper School in Kings Road and and Latymer Prep School in Upper Mall.

Sir Steve, who won his golds in consecutive games between 1984-2000, then spoke to pupils at a full assembly, where he praised the excellent facilities on offer at Latymer and the importance the school places on sport within its curriculum.

The visit to the school provided a poignant moment for Sir Steve, as it is where his rowing partner Andy Holmes, who won Gold with him in 1984 and 1988 attended.

Andy, who was born in Uxbridge , died in 2010. His widow Gabrielle was also present at the assembly, where she donated Andy’s Olympic blade to Latymer.
