From the outside BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir , popularly known as Neasden Temple, is a beautiful sight.

From the inside, it is just as wonderful.

The Hindu Temple was opened 22 years ago and at the time was the largest traditional Mandir outside India in 1,000 years.

We were invited to take our cameras through the doors of the marble masterpiece and we weren't disappointed.

It was built by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj who performed the consecration ceremony on August 20 1995.

Built in accordance with Hindu Shilpa Shastras, only natural God-given materials were used, therefore there is no metal in the construction.

It was built using 5,000 tonnes of stone consisting of 2,800 tonnes of Bulgarian limestone and 2,200 tonnes of Carrara marble from Italy, and Ambaji marble from Gujarat in India.

In total, 26,300 pieces of stone were individually carved in India and shipped to Neasden.

Adjoining the Mandir is the Haveli Prayer Hall which is made out of teak from managed farms in Burma.

There is also a gym to promote good health and encourage members to engage in sporting activities.

Girish Patel, one of the volunteers at Neasden Temple, said: "Our guru at the time, Pramukh Swami Maharaj wanted to promote good health amongst our members because our members tend to focus on education, business.

"He's included a gym in the whole complex so we can engage in health activities like keep fit, basketball, volleyball, tennis, indoor cricket.

Members take part in a range of different sporting activities

"All these things to enhance people's ability to engage in exercises because we believe healthier minds must be supported by healthier body."
