Security will be stepped up outside The Queen's residence at Buckingham Palace as part of a three month trial.

The Metropolitan Police has put road closures in place to stop vehicles from entering the area for the hugely popular military ceremony, the Changing the Guard, from Wednesday (December 21).

Westminster roads Constitution Hill, the Queen Victoria Memorial, Spur Road, Link Road and The Mall up to the junction with Marlborough Road will be closed to vehicles between 10.45am and 12.30pm on Changing the Guard days.

The planned measures for public safety were brought forward following the suspected "terror" attack at a Christmas market in Berlin, Germany, on Monday (December 19) night, and the murder of a Russian ambassador in Ankara, Turkey.

In addition, more barriers will be in place to maintain security for the guard movements.

The Met Police's commander Simon Bray, responsible for security, said: "The Met undertakes a range of different activities including strengthening security and high-visibility policing as part of a counter-terrorist strategy, and it will continue to take whatever action it believes is necessary to protect and reassure the public.

"Police continue to work in partnership to minimise disruption, but its priority is to ensure the safety and security of those who live, work and visit London."

In a request to the Royal Parks, which manages the roads, the Met Police said the high profile event's iconic location with military presence and large crowds made it a necessary precaution to close roads to protect the public and those taking part in the event.

The Met Police said the plans are a "precautionary measure" and not related to "specific intelligence".

The impact of the measures will be reviewed throughout trial.

The threat to the UK from international terrorism remains "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely.

The Met Police continue to review its security measures accordingly, the force said.

The public are urged to be alert and report anything suspicious to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. In an emergency 999 should be called.
