The London Assembly has unanimously chastised Sadiq Khan for not attending a plenary session he was invited to on his new transport policy.

Sadiq Khan sent Deputy Mayor for Transport Val Shawcross in his place as he attended a London Economic Action Partnership meeting.

All four parties in the London Assembly voted on a motion at the meeting on Wednesday (June 28) asking him to attend all sessions of the assembly he is invited to in the future.

The motion also noted that none of Mr Khan's predecessors failed to attend a transport plenary they were invited to.

All four parties in the London Assembly voted for the motion asking the Mayor to attend all future sessions when invited by the Assembly

Gareth Bacon AM , who proposed the motion, said: “By failing to attend these meetings the Mayor has displayed a worrying level of contempt for the body that holds him to account.

"Sadiq Khan needs to realise it is not optional to answer questions about the decisions he has taken and the frustration among members of all parties has been growing.

"We took this unusual step today to send a very strong message to the Mayor. I hope he has listened and will be present at future meetings at City Hall.”

The Mayor's transport policy , released last week sets his vision for the future of getting around London for the next 25 years.

In it, Mr Khan set forward his vision to have 80% of journeys in London made by foot, cycle or public transport and puts forward his ideas on congestion and ultra low emission zones.

Sadiq Khan had agreed with Assembly Chair Jeanette Arnold AM that he would send Val Shawcross in his place

The Mayor's office has said Mr Khan's engagement at the Economic Action Partnership had been arranged before the Plenary session was arranged.

The schedule for City Hall was significantly restructured due to the snap General Election earlier this month, but Mr Khan is due to attend a transport plenary later in the assembly's calendar year.

A spokesperson for the Mayor also said that the attendance of Val Shawcross in the Mayor's place was previously agreed with Assembly Chair Jennette Arnold AM.
