Improved road safety measures are due to be introduced for pedestrians and motorists accessing the busy West Middlesex Hospital.

Council contractors Hounslow Highways is investing in putting in a new zebra crossing, pedestrian islands and new entry points to the hospital from nearby side roads to boost safety conditions for all road users around the hospital in Isleworth.

In addition, the road will also be widened to allow for more vehicles at the hospital and to ensure traffic continues to flow in the area.

Other safety works planned include raising the footway level at major bus routes to separate pedestrians from traffic better, and the installation of additional street lighting on new footpaths.

Works have already begun to raise footway levels on Staines Road in January and further access improvements will take place on three more main roads throughout the year.

Councillor Amrit Mann, deputy leader of Hounslow Council said: “I’m particularly pleased to see the access to the hospital improved. Safety is the highest priority throughout our highways investment.”

Rob Gillespie, Hounslow Highways service director, added: “We have a moral responsibility to ensure that all road users can safely access key services in the borough and these schemes reflect our ongoing commitment to improving the safety of the borough’s infrastructure.”
