New ways to add homes onto existing residential blocks in north Kensington are to be explored.

Kensington and Chelsea Council says it will explore the potential for more housing to be unlocked at four addresses.

All options will be considered, including complete redevelopment of the buildings.

The blocks identified following a council meeting on Thursday (March 23) are 34-36 Oxford Gardens and 9-11 Raddington Road, both in Ladbroke Grove , and 144-186 Portland Road and 1-24 Elgin Mews, in Notting Hill .

As well as exploring the potential for full redevelopment, the team will also analyse the ongoing maintenance needs and refurbishment options for these buildings.

In June 2015, the Royal borough unveiled a programme to redevelop selected lower-density council estates to increase the number of homes in the borough.

In common with its estate regeneration programme, the council said that for redevelopment to be given the go-ahead it must:

  • Provide better quality new homes for existing and future council tenants
  • Deliver additional affordable housing, especially for those on low and middle incomes
  • Tackle the root causes of ill-health, unemployment, and crime in some of the borough’s most deprived neighbourhoods
  • Learn the lessons from the best parts of the borough’s built environment so as to build the ‘conservation areas of the future’

Commenting on the decision, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing Cllr Rock Feilding-Mellen said: “Building homes in Kensington and Chelsea presents a huge challenge for the council as not only is land prohibitively expensive but suitable sites are in short supply.

“That is why we must look at the sites we own to explore if it’s possible for them to accommodate more housing.

“It is very important to stress that at this point we are simply exploring all of the options open to us and that the views of residents and leaseholders are an integral part of this review.”
