A special ceremony has taken place at the Moberly Sports Centre in Westminster, which is currently undergoing redevelopment.

Its 1,000-tonne framework was revealed at a ceremony marking the start of the next phase of the centre’s construction on March 29.

It saw Westminster City Council’s Lord Mayor Cllr Steve Summers lay a stone to mark the occasion as work on the £28 million redevelopment continues.

Once open to the public, the centre, in Queen’s Park, will be home to the first newly built public swimming pools in Westminster since the Queen Mother Sport Centre opened in 1981.

The new state-of-the-art leisure centre will also include a spa-sauna; an eight court sports hall with spectator seating; a boxing gym; a gymnastics and multi-use hall; a health and fitness suite and exercise and dance studios.

As part of the redevelopment, a free-to-use outdoor gym and upgraded floodlit multi-use games area in Queen’s Park Gardens has been installed, along with a new synthetic pitch at St. Augustine’s School, which replaces the pitch at Moberly.

Once finished, the sports centre will be home to the borough's first newly built public swimming pools since the Queen Mother Sport Centre opened in 1981

The existing Jubilee Sports Centre is remaining open whilst Moberly is redeveloped. Once the New Moberly Sports Centre is opened, work will begin on a new community sports facility to replace the Jubilee Sports Centre.

The redevelopment of Moberly is part of the Active Queen’s Park programme, which includes the development of 155 new homes and facilities for the area, including 12 new affordable homes on the Jubilee site, in partnership with site developer Prime Place.

More than 70 homes will be built around the Moberly Sports Centre, with construction due to start shortly on the apartments and townhouses, and the first homes will be complete by the end of 2017.

Speaking after the ceremony, Cllr David Harvey, head of environment, sports and community at Westminster, said: “This is an important step in completing a centre that’s going to bring some world class training facilities to Westminster.

“This redevelopment will bring much-needed improvement of sport facilities to Queen’s Park and give people more options when it comes to making healthy choices around exercise.
