A motorist involved in a head-on collision which left an elderly driver in hospital has been jailed.

Jasdeep Munjal crashed into a car being driven by a 79-year-old woman in Harlington more than two years ago, before driving away from the scene and dumping the vehicle he was driving.

A woman from Hounslow , who lied to police in order to cover for the reckless driver, was also sentenced at the same hearing.

Munjal, from Somerset Way in Iver, Buckinghamshire, was jailed for three years at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday (September 13) after admitting to dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

The collision happened on August 7 2015 at around 9.30pm. Despite the severe damage to his car, 38-year-old Munjal drove off in a dangerous manner and then abandoned the vehicle nearby on the A4 Bath Road.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to a north London hospital where she was admitted and kept in overnight as a precaution.

Police soon found the abandoned car and through registered keeper records were able to trace it back to Munjal.

He told police on August 14 2015 that the vehicle had been stolen from his parents address in Iver and that he had been at the home of Suneia Bhanot from 5pm on the day of the collision.

The collision happened in Harlington High Street

She provided police with a statement on December 1 confirming this.

However, as police investigations continued, it became apparent that Munjal and Bhanot, 35, of Meadow Bank Gardens, Hounslow, had made false statements.

The pair were eventually arrested and charged.

At the crown court Bhanot, who admitted to perverting the course of justice, was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years, and told to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

Munjal was banned from driving for three years and must resit his test at the end of his disqualification.
