More rail travel disruption is expected this month with First Great Western (FGW) workers expected to stage a 72-hour strike.

Rail union RMT confirmed on Monday (August 3) that the union intend to stage a 72-hour strike over the August bank holiday weekend.

RMT union members at FGW are expected to strike from Saturday August 29 until Monday August 31.

Union members will also walk out for 24-hours on Sunday August 23.

The strike action is being held due to threats over jobs, proposed removal of buffet facilities and the introduction of driver-only operations.

The action follows a 48-hour strike last month, which led to widespread disruption to rail services.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Despite strenuous efforts by our negotiators we have not been able to secure the kind of progress required in the key areas of jobs, services and safety for us to reach an agreement.

“As a result, we have no option but to put further action on.

“The fact remains that if it is good enough for East Coast, using the same trains, to meet the very basic assurances sought by this trade union then it is good enough for First Great Western as well.

“We congratulate our members for their rock solid support for the strike action last month and we know that they remain united and determined as we continue with our campaign on these crucial issues.

"RMT remains available for talks.”

London Underground trade unions have announced that the planned 24-hour strike on Wednesday (August 5) will go ahead.
