Pupils have protested outside their school in White City at government plans to cut funding.

Children from Kenmont Primary were joined by Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter in the protest on Thursday (March 9), which comes on the back of a public Save Our Schools meeting organised by the local authority.

Schools across west London have raised concerns over proposed government cuts including the ability to continue to "hire quality teachers and leaders".

A consultation is running until March 22 on government proposals to recalculate the National Funding Formula which would see funding of schools slashed, with those in Hammersmith and Fulham facing a 3% reduction in addition to rising costs of more than 10% in the past three years.

Julie Howarth is the executive head at the school in Valliere Road.

She said: “We’re facing disproportionate cuts to our school budget at Kenmont, and we’d ask the government to amend their proposals, and ensure no school loses out like this.

"Otherwise we’re looking at increasing class sizes and reducing teaching staff, which can only affect the quality of our children’s education."

Columbine Mulvey, a parent at the school, added: “We just want proper funding for all schools.

"Childrens education is an investment in the future and to cut this investment seems frighteningly short sighted.

"As it stands, the proposals mean much less income for Kenmont, and we’re really worried about the day to day impact this will have at the school.

"For Kenmont, this means the loss of three teachers, and class sizes being over 30 children”.

More than 400 parents and teachers attended the council-organised public meeting at Hammersmith Town Hall on February 28 to oppose the National Funding Formula plans.

“The numbers of parents in attendance at the Support Our Schools meeting is testament to the breadth and depth of opposition to these government cuts to school funding”, said Cllr Stephen Cowan, the Hammersmith and Fulham council leader.

The school's executive head said: 'We’re looking at increasing class sizes and reducing teaching staff, which can only affect the quality of our children’s education'

“We are determined to ensure schools are properly funded by government to maintain the high standards that children deserve, and with such strong support from local parents, I am convinced this is a fight we can win.”

Peter Haylock, chairman of Hammersmith and Fulham's Schools’ Forum said: “If schools’ budgets are cut, at a time when costs are increasingly significantly, it can only have a negative effect on the education that we are able to deliver.”
