With RideLondon taking place during the summer holidays, some families might be inclined to dust down their bikes and get some fresh air.

The annual cycling festival, which takes place on August 1 and 2, will not only see professional cyclists race, but also amateurs too.

There will also be lots of free cycling activities along the route for the public to enjoy.

If you're planning to cycle on London's busy roads this summer, here are some top tips to help you stay safe:

  1. Wear bright or reflective clothing and always use lights in poor visibility
  2. Look ahead so you can avoid emerging vehicles without swerving
  3. Be careful when pulling out of side roads and onto roundabouts
  4. Look out for other vehicles, especially at junctions
  5. Ride where drivers can see you, away from the gutter and clear of opening doors
  6. Look ahead and identify the course needed to avoid hazards and make manoeuvres
  7. Make sure your helmet is fitted correctly
