Anti-Heathrow expansion protesters gave visitors to a government consultation their view on how a third runway would harm life in Hammersmith and Fulham .
Around 300 people attended the Hammersmith leg of the Department for Transport’s public consultation taking place throughout west London and the surrounding area on March 6.
They were met by local campaign group handfnothirdrunway , which set up outside the event at Hammersmith Town Hall to give visitors a local view of what expansion could mean for the area.
Heathrow Airport third runway
It is opposing government third runway plans for the airport , claiming it would harm air quality, increase traffic and noise in the borough and potentially cause overcrowding on public transport.
Group chair Christina Smyth said afterwards: “Monday’s event was successful in helping residents ask well informed questions of Department for Transport officials - most of which the officials couldn’t answer.
“It also started to build awareness with residents not currently disturbed by aircraft noise, but many are still in blissful ignorance that their peace will be shattered.”
handfnothirdrunway also plan to run a stall at Lyric Square in Hammersmith before the end of the consultation on May 25 to raise further awareness.
Campaign groups Hacan and TAG (Teddington Action Group) handed out fliers about pollution concerns associated with a potential new runway when the consultation roadshow was held at Twickenham in February.
Exhibition events have already been held other areas including Southall, Ealing, Uxbridge, West Drayton, Hounslow, Isleworth, Kensington and Richmond.
