A protest group which says it was “stood-up” by Westway Trust plan to attend the charity’s AGM on Monday (November 23).

Westway23 was set up earlier this year to challenge the running of the Trust, which looks after the 23 acres of land beneath the A40 motorway in Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove .

The Trust had been invited to attend a meeting by the action group but pulled out days in advance, much to the anger of organisers .

Now, those organisers intend to attend to the public AGM so they can finally have the face-to-face dialogue.

Toby Laurent Belson, from Westway23, said: “This shows the community is desperate to engage with the Trust, on the community’s terms and not simply buy into their processes which we simply do not have any faith in.”

Trust chief executive Angela McConville said she had been pleased to attend Westway23’s meeting on November 11 , but soon changed her mind.

She wrote in her Westway Trust blog: “What started as a proposed discrete group has become a rallying call for an open meeting, and we have been advised that the audience is likely to be over 200 people with no clear objectives of what we can achieve.

“It is almost impossible to hold 200 conversations at once. Plus, because of the way it’s been publicised we cannot guarantee that everyone will be from the local area and some may not have good intentions.”

She said she was instead looking forward to meeting a small group which represents the views of Westway23, but Laurent Belson labelled this “divide-and-rule”.

Looking forward to the AGM he said: “We hope we raise awareness within the community that people are on their case, that people are holding them to account and questioning their decision and actions.

“Attend the meeting to make it clear the community is deeply concerned , and willing to approach the trust in any public forum.

“Again, we are intending to show them that we stand united and stand up for our rights and hold them to account.”

Westway Trust said it welcomed Westway23’s attendance. A spokesperson said: “Our AGM is an open meeting and we welcome members of all parts of the community who wish to attend.”

It starts at 7pm at St Helen’s Church, St Helen’s Garden, North Kensington, W10 6LP.
