Work has started on a major new housing project to build more than 900 homes on the site of Hounslow Civic Centre.

The £410m development, which has been labelled as "bland" by some councillors, will also include a new civic building with council offices, a library and a café for Hounslow council .

A ceremony to mark the first day of construction was held at Lampton Park Conference Centre, Lampton Road, Hounslow on Wednesday (January 25).

The project is a three way partnership agreement with Hounslow council between Notting Hill Housing and Linkcity, the property development company of Bouygues UK.

New civic building for Hounslow

The development is one of former Mayor of London Boris Johnson's first Housing Zones to support plans to build more new and affordable homes in London.

Notting Hill Housing will develop the residential part of the scheme providing 919 new homes including affordable housing built on the current civic centre site on Lampton Road.

This will consist of a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments and houses across 10 buildings varying between three and nine storeys.

Linkcity will develop the new civic building, built on a new site in Bath Road, in Hounslow town centre.

The new building will contain shared offices for council, police and health services in the heart of the borough with Bouygues UK as the main contractor.

The relocation of the council offices to the new site will be completed in 2019.

The event was attended by James Murray, deputy mayor for housing and residential development at City Hall, Fabienne Viala, chairman of Bouygues Construction, councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council and Kate Davies, chief executive for Notting Hill Housing.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council, said: “We’re delighted to officially mark the start of work on what is a key housing development for the borough, delivered in partnership by the GLA, Notting Hill Housing, Bouygues UK and the council.

“The council is committed to making sure more good quality homes – including affordable homes – are provided in Hounslow, and the fact that half of the homes in this development will be affordable is a huge achievement.

“The added bonus of releasing the current Civic Centre site is that we will gain a new, modern civic building in the heart of Hounslow town centre, which will not only support more efficient ways of working and allow us to improve our services to residents, but deliver a real boost to the local economy.”
