People in Hounslow are being urged to have their say on plans to improve walking and cycling in Brentford.

Transport for London (TfL) and Hounslow council launched proposals for two junctions of the A4 at Windmill Road and Clayponds Avenue to provide better and safer access for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

The jointly funded plans form part of TfL’s £4bn road modernisation plans.

Alan Bristow, TfL’s director of road space management, said: “These proposals for the A4 in Brentford would make it easier and safer to get to schools, shops and restaurants - a long-held desire of many residents.

“The new designs would help protect vulnerable road users on a busy stretch of the capital’s roads.”

The proposals would see the installation of two new toucan crossings, for signalised pedestrians and cyclists, on the south side of the Windmill Road/A4 junction; and the north side of the Clayponds Avenue/A4 junction.

Both junctions would also introduce shared areas for pedestrians and cyclists around the crossing points, improved road markings, new traffic signals and better lighting at the two A4 crossing points (under the M4).

There would also be a right turn ban from the A4 eastbound into Windmill Road, to help maintain traffic flow and increase safety at the junction, with drivers using Boston Manor or Ealing Road to access the south side of Windmill Road; as well as new traffic island.

In addition, at Clayponds Avenue and Clayponds Lane plans include cyclist drop kerbs so riders can easily join and leave the shared footway; as well as a wider carriageway and central pedestrian island.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow council, added: “These proposals are looking at ways to improve and make safer access for pedestrians and cyclists at these two junctions.

“We welcome the consultation and urge our residents to let TfL know what they think.”

While completing these works, the existing signalling equipment would be upgraded.

These proposals are on par with wider road improvements such as the modernisation of signals on Lionel Road and Brook Lane.

The consultation on Windmill Road and Clayponds Avenue runs until Sunday February 14.
