New plans to redevelop Hammersmith Town Hall and build a new cinema and arts quarter have been unveiled.

Plans for the major regeneration around the King Street area were announced by Hammersmith and Fulham Council .

Members of the public are now being asked to give their feedback, with two consultation events taking place later this week.

Demolition work on the cinema has already begun, but the council said it would go back to the drawing board after developers said its plans were no longer financially liable .

Under proposals put forward by the local authority, new homes will also be built, with 50% promised to be genuinely affordable housing for local residents.

The council’s development partner is not-for-profit housing provider A2 Dominion, while architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has been commissioned to work up a new scheme.

Speaking about the new plans, council leader Stephen Cowan said: “We ended the council’s agreement with the developers of the previous scheme after they told us that their proposals were not financially viable because of changes in market conditions.

“The developers told us this only after they had begun to demolish the cinema. Having considered their alternative proposals, we decided it was in the best interests of our residents to take a different path.”

According to the Labour-run council, the plans would see:

  • A modern new cinema
  • At least 50% genuinely-affordable housing for local residents
  • Demolishing the ugly Town Hall extension
  • A new public space in front of a restored Town Hall
  • Staying within the massing and height of the former scheme
  • New affordable, flexible office space for business start-ups
  • A new arts quarter alongside new cafés, shops and restaurants
  • Improved green spaces to help link King Street to the riverside
  • Inclusive design to ensure excellent disability access
  • Measures to minimise the buildings’ carbon footprint

Cllr Cowan said the council would work with residents, adding: “We all hope to deliver a new scheme that will make Hammersmith proud.”

The public consultation opens on Thursday (November 9), with public events taking place at the Hammersmith Town Hall that day, from 4pm to 8pm, and on Saturday (November 11) from 10am to 2pm.

More consultation dates are expected to be added later this year, with the council hoping to submit a planning application early in the new year.

If planning permission is given, construction work could begin in the summer of 2018.
