Work to clear the dumped rubbish on the future site of a Lidl store in Hayes Town has started after months of delays.

Travellers occupied the old Hayes Swimming Pool site in Central Avenue last year and the site has been filled with waste ever since.

The discount supermarket has now confirmed that it has started work to clear the site and that construction on the new discount supermarket is expected to start at the end of February.

In May last year, around 40 caravans were seen camped up in the car park of the boarded-up swimming pool site.

The travellers have since been evicted but the mess left behind had remained.

There had been a delay in clearing the rubbish from the site while expert advice was sought, but work started last week and is expected to last three weeks.

A view of the waste dumped in the Lidl site

A Lidl spokesman said in December : “We were incredibly concerned to hear about the issues at our site in Hayes.

“As soon as we were made aware we started legal proceedings and successfully got the travellers evicted.”

The spokesman added on Tuesday (January 10): “We can confirm that the land is indeed being cleared and will be completed within three weeks.

“Construction is due to start towards the end of February.”
