A petition put to Hounslow Council to reject the proposed development of a Morrisons site in Brentford has generated more than 220 signatures.

The online petition is against plans to build a new housing development on the site in Hounslow on the grounds that is it "over-bearing, out-of-scale and out-of-character with the surrounding vicinity" according to the petition.

Essential Living bought the Morrisons store and car park in High Street, Brentford, in 2015 for £16.25m.

The developer plans to build a mixed-use development at the site, with 225 residential rental apartments above a number of shops, cafés, restaurants and a new supermarket.

However, these plans have been subject to backlash by members of the local community, some of whom are concerned that it will block daylight into the classrooms and playground of a neighbouring primary school.

During a public meeting surrounding the issue on January 27, Tony Firkins of Hounslow Green Party voiced the concern of the public.

“The overwhelming reaction of the public was opposition to these schemes, which are huge, ugly and completely out of character for the area" he said.

Adding: "They will dwarf other buildings including St Paul’s primary school, crowding them in and reducing daylight.”

Those opposing say the flats also are unaffordable and urge the plans to be altered.

Mr Firkins said: “We support new affordable housing and would like this application to be reworked so that it provides the necessary new infrastructure and more affordable homes, including provision for the homeless and vulnerable.”

In response to the petition Martin Bellinger, chief operating officer at Essential Living, said: "Essential Living will continue to work closely with the local community as we look to deliver Brentford's first homes designed specifically for rent.

"High quality housing, combined with shops, cafes, restaurants and a new supermarket, will help support the high street's regeneration, while apartments at a range of price-points and sizes will ensure families and those on low-incomes don't lose out."

The petition closes on Monday, February 20.
