Harrow paramedics have helped deliver a baby on the side of the A406 North Circular Road.

Dominic Stark and apprentice paramedic Joshua Waugh were called to Abbey Road near Neasden in Brent at around 2pm on Monday to help the woman, who was stuck in heavy traffic on her way to hospital.

The pair found the expectant mum having contractions in her car and managed to move her to their ambulance where they hoped to whisk her to hospital. However, before they could move her further a baby girl was born.

It is the ninth child Mr Stark has delivered, earning him the nickname Dom Stork. At the time he tweeted from his @LAS_Harrow account: "We have just delivered a baby on the side of a busy London motorway #proudparamedics #noordinarychallenge."

Later, the 23-year-old said: “We managed to move mum in between a contraction from her car to an ambulance but it all happened very quickly. I've helped deliver a few babies, but it's my first under such unusual circumstances on the roadside. Josh and I have attended a few deliveries... it was great to welcome another little one into the world, as a team, again."

The mum and baby were taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington to be checked over.

Peter Rhodes, ambulance operations manager for Brent and Harrow said the mum made the right decision to drive herself to the hospital, and the right decision to call the ambulance.

He said: "This woman was completely right to make her own way to hospital. Ambulances are needed for life-threatening emergencies, and normal labour is not an emergency. But on the rare occasions an ambulance may be needed, one of our crews will get there as quickly as possible and make as assessment about whether to not to bring you to hospital."

Earlier today a baby boy had to be rescued by firefighters after he got his leg stuck in a Tesco shopping trolley.
