A pair of smash-and-grab burglars, who stole luxury handbags worth £74,000 in a one-minute raid at a Mayfair store, have been jailed.

Dean Dinan, 20, and Jason Furtado, 18, received 28 and 19-month sentences, respectively, for conspiracy to commit burglary.

Both Dinan, from Croydon, and Furtado, from Islington, were sentenced on May 22 at Blackfriars Crown Court to a young offenders institute after pleading guilty at the same court on April 24, police said in a statement.

The break-in happened at the Loewe store, in Mount Street, just before 1am on December 11 last year.

A gang of nine men on six stolen motorbikes approached the shop and rammed the front door open before storming in and grabbing luxury handbags from the shelves, police said.

The gang stole 57 handbags - with a total value of £74,035 - during the 69-second spree. They escaped on the bikes through Oxford Street.

The following morning, Flying Squad detectives recovered 37 of the handbags from Dinan’s address. Furtado was at the address with Dinan and told police he was there to visit someone. Both were arrested for handling stolen goods.

Detectives continued to carry out extensive CCTV enquires and were able to establish that both Dinan and Furtado were involved in the raid and not just responsible for handling stolen goods.

CCTV showed Dinan wearing a parka-style coat with a fur-lined hood and black crash helmet and Furtado wearing a black coat and a multi-coloured crash helmet during the burglary. With the two wearing such distinctive clothing, detectives were able to go through CCTV footage and track their movements to Dinan’s home address following the burglary.

Officers were unable to recover the outstanding 19 bags that were stolen.

Detective Constable Phelim Redmond, from the Flying Squad, said after the sentencing: "There are still a number of people outstanding that are wanted in connection with the incident.

"Our investigation remains open and dedicated officers will continue to trace the others responsible."

Dinan was also fined £120.
