One man and one woman were rushed to hospital suffering from burns following the explosion in Oxford Street.

Paramedics treated two patients at the scene before they were taken as "priority" for further medical attention on Thursday (September 7) evening.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called just after 7pm and sent a hazardous area response team, two ambulance crews and a motorcycle responder.

A LAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 7.03pm yesterday (Thursday September 7) to Oxford Street to reports of an incident.

"We treated two patients - a male and a female - for burns and took them as a priority to hospital."

Shoppers were seen in mass panic as plumes of smoke covered an area in Oxford Street, Westminster, outside the New Balance store, not far from the tube station.

Metropolitan Police said there had been a "small power network explosion " a short time after it was first reported.

The company responsible for supplying electricity in the capital, UK Power Networks, sent engineers to the scene.

In a statement released to getwestlondon on Friday (September 8), the company said it was working with emergency services to "establish the cause of the incident."
