A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a serious a crash involving a cyclist in Oxford Street.

A 40-year-old female pedestrian suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to a central London hospital where her condition was said to be "life threatening."

Next of kin have been informed.

Officers from Westminster were called to reports of a road traffic collision at 4.29pm on Tuesday (September 12).

Police arrived at the scene to find a pedal cyclist had been in collision with a pedestrian.

The rider stopped at the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The pedestrian, a woman in her 40s suffered a severe head injury.

"The injured woman was taken to a central London hospital where her condition has been deemed life threatening.

"Next of kin are aware and at the hospital."

Road closures were in place for several hours in Oxford Street, which was closed in both directions between Davies St and Duke St, while investigation works were carried out.

Buses were placed on diversion but tube stations remained unaffected.

Police said no arrests have been made and officers from Westminster are investigating.
