One third of people living in west London consider it unnecessary to own a car due to the cost of ownership, according to a new study.

Research from London based transportation app Ubeeqo , found 32% of west London residents find the running costs of a car too high, as well as being put off by parking fees and traffic.

A total of 3% of those polled went as far as saying owning a car was “totally absurd and unnecessary.”

The survey was carried out in February 2017 involving 1,000 people in the west London area and revealed more people are car sharing and taking public transport.

The study said 74% of those who opposed car ownership believe public transport is the best way to get around, with 57% saying they are happy to get around on foot and 4% choosing car-pooling.

The average journey costs over £14 each way

54% of households in London have at least one car

According to Transport for London , there are 2.6million cars registered in the capital and 54% of households in London have at least one car, with those living in the outer areas of London and with poor access to public transport, being more likely to own a car.

It is the cost of keeping a car which seems to be putting west Londoners off.

The Ubeego study found west Londoners are making less than 200 car journeys a year, with the average journey costing more than £14 each way.

The average price of a car costs £9,325 and is kept for around six years, which equates to £1,500 per year.

One in seven west Londoners say fuel is costing them more than £100 a month, with 82% paying more than £200 a year on car insurance.

3% said owning a car was “totally absurd”

There was a small proportion of people in favour of car ownership, 19% of those polled said owning their own car was vital.

Henrik Jensen, UK managing director of Ubeeqo said: “It is very interesting to see that the future of car ownership is being considered as redundant.

"With owning a car becoming increasingly unaffordable – especially in London – people are seeking alternative ways to get around.

"Thankfully there are a range of options from public transport to car clubs to help overcome these issues.”
