A prolific shoplifter who carried out a string of thefts of designer handbags, purses and jewellery in west London has been jailed for 45 months.

Austin Caballero had been charged with 43 counts of theft and two counts of dishonestly obtaining services .

The offences took place in Kensington and Chelsea borough, Westminster and Camden between February 20 2014 and June 29 2015.

Metropolitan Police said Caballero had helped himself to jewellery, clothing, handbags, purses, cosmetics and sunglasses worth £35,000 from high-end stores.

Police had appealed for his whereabouts as part of their investigation and captured the 42-year-old, of no fixed abode, on New Year’s Day.

Detective Sergeant Eliot Porritt, of the MPS Proactive Super Recogniser Unit, said at the time a police appeal was launched to find Caballero that he had been identified as the key suspect thanks to "excellent information from members of the public".

Appearing at Blackfriars Crown Court on April 1 Caballero admitted to all but five theft charges and was handed the custodial sentence.
