The number of children injured on west London's roads has risen by over 7% in the last year.

According to official road accident figures from the Department for Transport, and compiled by the Trinity Mirror data team, 420 children under the age of 16 were hurt in road accidents in the area in 2014.

Compared to 393 who were injured in 2013, the 2014 figures are a 7.1% rise.

Brent is the borough with the largest number of road accidents of this kind, with 89 in 2014, while Hillingdon came in second with 81.

Of the 420 children who were injured in 2014, 39 sustained serious or fatal injuries, one more than in 2013.

Across Britain as a whole, 16,272 children under the age of 16 were injured on the roads in 2014, a rise of 6.2% compared to the 15,756 injured in 2013.

This is the first time in over a decade that the number of children hurt on Britain's roads has increased.

Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “Britain continues to have some of the safest roads in the world.

"In 2013, fewer people died on British roads than at any point since records began and last year was the third lowest total on record.

"There were also 45% fewer fatalities in 2014 than a decade ago.

“But behind every statistic is a personal tragedy so we are determined to do more.

"Thanks to new laws, police now have tougher powers to tackle drink and drug driving, and there are increased penalties for speeding and for using a mobile phone at the wheel.

"We also plan to spend £28bn on improving the conditions of Britain’s roads over the next six years, as well as investing in technology to make cars safer.

“We are working closely with road safety groups as we consider what more can be done.”
