A Northwood independent girls' school has just marked a new era as an eco-friendly building opened its doors for the first time on the first day of term.

The St Helen's School site in Eastbury Road has undergone a major transformation over the last 14 months while the new green building was built.

It designed to be as a energy efficient and as ecologically sustainable as possible, including solar panels and 'living roofs'.

Headmistress of the school, Dr Mary Short, said: “The new junior school is a beautiful new addition to St Helen's and provides a wonderful and modern environment which will promote exciting learning for keen young minds.

Other work is planned for the school over the next 18 months

“I look forward to seeing the girls' imagination and creativity thrive in their new school.”

The site also encourages biodiversity with a selection of plants and trees to draw in birds, spiders, bees and other insects.

It includes large and light classrooms, a state-of-the-art discovery centre, as well as facilities for music, art, design and technology, science and drama.

St Helen's senior school has also undergone a transformation with the School House getting a new reception area, seminar rooms and a reading room.

Further renovations are also planned for the school over the next 18 months including a new sixth form hub, examinations centre and music school.

Dr Short added: “Buildings and improvements to facilities are important because they provide the space within which every girl can pursue her dreams and achieve her potential.

“But what makes St Helen's truly exceptional are the opportunities which we provide for girls to expand their horizons, discover new passions and develop their leadership skills.
