A North Acton student halls of residence has been shortlisted for an 'ugly architecture award'.

Jonathan Notley, a member of West Acton Residents' Association (WARA), branded the building a "monstrosity".

He felt so strongly against the over-development of the area he ran as an independent candidate in the General Election.

Now, his nomination for Woodward Hall, an Imperial College London (ICL) student halls, has made the shortlist of the Carbuncle Cup 2015.

The Carbuncle Cup is an architecture prize, given annually by the magazine Building Design to "the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months".

“These featureless blocks, with ugly cladding, look like they were made in kit form" says Mr Notley

The ICL hall faces “stiff competition” from the 'Walkie Talkie' building in the City of London, but Mr Notley thinks the “monstrosity” should win the prize.

In his nomination, he said: “These featureless blocks, with ugly cladding, look like they were made in kit form. They are crammed in on a postage stamp-sized plot of land, sandwiched between a cemetery, the Park Royal industrial estate and the A40 arterial road. The formula seems to be pack them in, pile them high, build them cheap.

“At 19 storeys the Imperial College Towers at North Acton leer over the nearby two-storey residential neighbourhood to the west, blocking out the rising sun, and ruining the skyline for miles around.”

UPDATE: Student halls beaten by Walkie Talkie building in final

Mr Notley feels students are being “stuffed away” and missing out on campus life as a result.

“It would have been nicer if the students could have kept their premises in Kensington. I nearly went to Imperial College and one of the attractions was to live near the campus where all the action was going on instead of being stuffed at the edge of an industrial estate next to the A40 and a cemetery in the middle of nowhere.

“Students just shouldn't be dumped in the cheapest location possible.”

Imperial College London were contacted but have not provided a comment.
