Tenants have moved into the first council homes to be built in the borough of Brent in 30 years.

The homes have been built by Brent Housing Partnership as part of Brent Council's new homes programmes which aims to build 700 new houses in the borough by 2019.

Seven new council owned houses have been built on former garage sites in three locations, including Slough Lane in Kinsgbury, Eskdale Close in North Wembley and Runbury Circle in North Harp.

The homes have cost £1.4m to build with help from a grant of £326,000 from the Greater London Authority, with this being the first time in three decades that the council has funded its own building programme.

Councillor Harbi Farah said: "We are very happy to welcome residents to their new homes today.

"Brent Council, working with BHP, are building new homes to meet the ever growing demand.

"It makes our efforts all the more rewarding to see first-hand how these homes are making a positive difference to families moving in."

Meanwhile, Zohrah Esmate, one of the tenants who recently moved into her new home, said: "We have been living in temporary accommodation and on the waiting list for housing for 10 years.

"We have three children and were severely overcrowded. This home is beautiful - it is close to the children’s school and there is space for them to run around.

"Our quality of life has really improved. We are very grateful to BHP and Brent Council for providing us with this beautiful home, and it is positive to see that more homes will be built in the future for families in need."
