A scheme that encourages retailers to be more civic minded and respect their local environment and neighbours has been launched in Kensington and Chelsea.

The Responsible Retailers scheme recognises businesses that tackle litter and noise and manage their waste responsibly.

It is a voluntary agreement between local businesses and the royal borough, and those that sign up to the scheme receive a certificate and window sticker to display in their premises, as well as support from the council.

Eight local businesses attended the launch of the scheme earlier this month (August 8) at the restaurant Comptoir Libanais on Exhibition Road, South Kensington, and to date, 17 businesses have signed up.

They include Comptoir Libanais, Casa Brindisa, Le Pain Quotidian, Cafe Cremerie, Bubbleology, Honest Burgers, Wafflemeister and Gails Bakery.

Cllr Tim Ahearn is head of environment, environmental health and leisure at the council. He said: “The scheme aims to encourage businesses to be more civic minded, working in partnership with the council to improve the environment, keeping the borough clean and litter free, and showing customers they are taking a proactive approach to the environment in the royal borough.”
