Planning permission has been granted to allow eight new units to be used by the community in Ladbroke Grove.

Westway Trust , which operates the 23 acres of land beneath the Westway, was given permission to build the small flexible units in Thorpe Close.

They have been designed to create space for local entrepreneurs, community groups and artists to share, perform, sell and deliver activities that support the local community, and will be available to hire from one day up to three months, according to the trust.

The units have been partly funded by the Mayor of London’s High Street Fund and aim to bring life to Thorpe Close, the stretch of road which links Ladbroke Grove to Portobello Road, under the Westway.

On days when the Vintage Clothes Market is operating, Thorpe Close is normally busy but on quiet days it "more closely resembles a car park".

Westway Trust says the units will transform the space into an innovative and exciting shopping, eating and community space, seven-days a week.

“The spaces will be experimental with their function and occupants changing regularly in order to give as many local people as possible the opportunity to access space and try out their ideas,” a spokesperson said.

Westway Trust chief executive Angela McConville said it would be “a living example of our commitment to celebrating the diversity of North Kensington” and added: “Animating Thorpe Close is the first stage of our plans for the Portobello area and will create a new space for start-up businesses and community and cultural activity seven days a week.

“On market days the street is full of life and we want to bring that atmosphere to every other day of the week.”

The charity is now looking for the first occupants for the units, which will be mainly built off-site and then opened in September this year.
