The founders of a new primary school in Brentford say they expect to open on time despite work beginning less than a month before pupils are due to start.

Floreat Brentford is due to open on September 14 in the ground floor of the Trico House apartment block on the Great West Quarter estate in Ealing Road.

The new location was only announced at the end of July after plans for a temporary building in Brent Lea Recreation Ground were dropped at the eleventh hour in the face of strong public opposition.

Work to kit out the new school began in the week commencing August 17 - less than a month before the advertised start date.

But a spokesman for the school's founder Floreat Education told getwestlondon: "We are confident we will be able to meet the deadline of September 14."

He added that the start date was always intended to be later than most other schools due to a three-week new teacher training programme.

Residents living on the estate have started a petition against the school opening there, which had 126 signatures as of August 30.

They say they were not consulted about the plans and are concerned about the impact of parking and traffic. They have also asked what space will be available for children to play outdoors.

Barratt Homes, which developed the site, said it could not comment as the leasehold to Trico House had been sold earlier this year.

Barratt could not say who had bought the leasehold, but getwestlondon understands it is now owned by Wharton Investments, which has not responded to our enquiries.

Floreat Brentford is a two-form entry school and will start with just 60 pupils, expanding each year until it reaches capacity.

It plans to remain at Trico House for two years and is still looking for a permanent home in conjunction with the Education Funding Agency, which finances new schools.
