A community focused project aimed at helping people in west London into employment has been launched.

The Best Chance programme is run by Shepherds Bush Housing Group (SBHG) from its community hub in Glenthorne Road, Hammersmith and offers support into employment, education or training for anyone and will mainly work in Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow .

It officially opened by Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter on April 14. He said: “This to me is a socially responsible landlord, taking its duties seriously. People need that extra support and SBHG have my full support.”

It has been reported that west London is enjoying a jobs boom , but unemployment is still a problem for thousands in the area.

Community Investment Manager Natalie Coode, who oversees the Best Chance programme, said: “We have a fantastic team who are experienced in helping people into work and know the local area. We are here to help people build the skills and experience to get worthwhile jobs.

"Previously we focused on assisting our own residents but now we are expanding to include the wider community.”

Somia Ditta was an apprentice at SBHG’s furniture recycling service and is about to start working for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea .

She said: “One of the best things about my apprenticeship is that it has rebuilt my confidence. If it was not for this apprenticeship I would never have been able to get a step further to my dream job which is working for RBKC council.”

Former Armed Services man Neil Allan, who is now volunteering through Best Chance, said: “I am here to give my journey and experience with Best Chance.

"I have benefited from job coaching and this week, have started as a volunteer maintenance administrator at SBHG . It’s an excellent initiative.”

It is hoped new major projects, such as the massive Cargian plan, will create jobs in the future .
