A new school has been granted permission to remain at the Brentford tower block where it opened in September.

Floreat Brentford is located on the ground floor of Trico House, at the Great West Quarter estate, in Ealing Road, Brentford.

The primary free school was given the go-ahead by Hounslow Council's planning committee on Thursday, November 5 to remain there for up to three years while it searches for a permanent home.

The school's founders had intended to open at Brent Lea Recreation Ground but those plans were scuppered by campaigners objecting to the loss of green space.

Forced to find an emergency alternative, they settled on Trico House, the ground floor of which was originally meant for office use but was lying vacant.

A number of residents on the estate had objected to the school opening there , claiming it would lead to traffic and parking issues, and more than 140 people signed a petition opposing the move.

However, council planning officer Marilyn Smith told councillors on the planning committee no such issues had materialised, and a number of residents had written in support of the school's application since it opened.

Councillors approved the application but raised concerns about poor lighting on the estate, which they feared could put children at risk.

Council officers said they would take the issue up with Barratt, which manages the estate.

The school is still looking for a permanent site and has not ruled out applying to build on Brent Lea Recreation Ground.

However, proposals for a new bus garage and 350 new homes near Brentford FC's planned new stadium have opened up the possibility of moving to the current site of Metroline's bus garage in Commerce Road.

This is the site which was originally earmarked for the school but it was not available in time for the opening.
