A number plate based in west London has gone on sale for £2.5million in what the seller says is an attempt to break the British record.

The plate says "LO17 DAN", reading as "London", and appeared on eBay to be collected from an address in Middlesex.

It was purchased from DVLA's website on Tuesday (January 4) for £799, the government agency confirmed.

But the seller says pictures posted on eBay are for reference only and are "not included", so it is not clear what the real version looks like.

An account under "avdhudala-0" has not put the item under auction, saying that payment must be immediate, but that he will "accept reasonable offers".

The seller says: "Private cherished registration for sale

"But today I sell you a cherished registration that I hold on DVLA retention
