A mysterious man in a white rabbit costume has been startling commuters every month by appearing in the same spot to wave at passers by.

The white rabbit of Barnes was snapped as he perched on the wall on Tuesday (November 1), appearing as he does on the first of every month.

Those who have spotted the man in Richmond have expressed mixed reactions to the figure who emerged in the mist along the Thames wearing a colourful scarf and waistcoat.

One driver who spotted the rabbit said: "Is that a real thing? If so, that's absolutely brilliant."

Another added: "Bless him! What does he do the rest of the month? Hope people wave back to him."

But others said it was "genuinely terrifying", with one Londoner tweeting: "How is this OK?"

The white rabbit himself took to social media to remind people it was just a friendly gesture.

He wrote: "Today is the day and its another month!

"Yes he's back so if you are up early and you read this, take a peak out of you car, bus window or just walking to the station there's a welcoming wave and a hug awaits at 7am."

You can see the white rabbit once a month on the first of every month

Writing messages of "white rabbit wisdom" on social media each month, the rabbit, who has confirmed himself to be a man, said it was all about celebrating "each month with a smile."

In a mystical message to the capital, he continued: "Take time to breath, enjoy the beauty of the misty days, the unknown, the adventure that awaits you every day throughout this month of November.

"It is part of life that we have difficult days, but in the mist there is a moment to make you smile, a happening, a joy, a seed of hope, the love and support of your family and friends a new encounter, inspiration, joy and celebrations."
