A Muslim woman captured the shocking moment she was abused by a man in a corner shop in Shepherd's Bush, who demanded to know why she was wearing a face veil.

Ahlam Saed, 25, filmed as the man ranted and yelled at her in an alleged racial attack, asking if she was a man or a woman because she was wearing her niqab.

Miss Saed said she began filming after being called "batman" and various other insults about her traditional Muslim dress.

In the video, the man can be heard saying: "Why are you dressed like that? How do they (his children) know if you're a man or a woman?"

The children can later be heard crying in the background as the row continues for more than five minutes.

The argument continues despite attempted interventions by the shopkeeper and other customers.

Police investigating incident

Miss Saed, of Somali origin, said she had been left distraught by the confrontation and wanted to share the footage to show the abuse some Muslims are subjected to.

In an interview with the Mail Online , she said: "At first I was angry with what he was saying but I decided to filter it out and show him that I did speak English and that I am educated.

"But all I got was effing and blinding, so it was was useless trying to have a conversation.

"It's upsetting that people like me, who were minding their own business, have to go through this sort of thing."

Detectives from Ealing’s community safety unit are appealing for the woman to come forward to assist with their hate-crime investigation.

The Metropolitan Police Service said it will not tolerate hate crime and has more than 900 specialist officers across London committed to tackling it in all its forms.

Anyone with information to assist the investigation, or who was in the store when the footage was taken, should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, as enquiries are ongoing.

In January, footage of a man hurling homophobic abuse at a fellow passenger on the London Underground was shared, as British Transport Police said it was investigating the incident.

Trinity Mirror has chosen not to show some of the video from the Shepherd's Bush shop due to the potentially sensitive nature of language used.
