Volunteers bagged up more than 40 rubbish sacks of rubbish while hauling power tools and shopping trolleys out of a pond in Feltham .

Friends of Bridge House Pond on Hanworth Road rolled up their sleeves to clear the pond and surrounding area from litter as part of a Clean for The Queen event to mark the monarch’s upcoming 90th birthday.

As well as scooping out endless bottles and cans as well as footballs from the pond, the team of helpers worked hard to scrub away the unsightly graffiti around the site.

Other work carried out at the clean-up in early March included scrubbing the decking and trimming hedges.

The mount of rubbish filled more than 40 bin bags.

Equipment for the clear up was supplied by Carillion and Hounslow council's enforcement team, who have also started a drive to clamp down on front gardens being used by residents as a dumping ground.

Restoring a 'hidden gem'

Richard Clarke, from the Friends of Bridge House Pond, said: “As residents we want to celebrate what we feel is a hidden gem in Feltham - the Bridge House Pond and the park area - opposite Feltham station.

“The clean-up day made such a difference to a previously overgrown area covered in litter. It was great to work together with so many enthusiastic volunteers to help improve the area so that it can be enjoyed by everyone.

“We have now formed a ‘Friends’ group to continue to look after and improve the area, and would love more people to get involved.”

A similar clean-up event took place in neighbouring borough Hammersmith as part of a special clean-up weekend championed by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson .

Volunteers are needed to join the next clean-up at Padstow Walk clearing the railway alley in Feltham on Thursday (April 7) from 11am to 3pm.
